The Pearl Brewery was founded in 1883 as the San Antonio Brewing Association on the banks of the San Antonio River, brewing its flagship Pearl Beer which became one of Texas's most iconic brands. The brewery operated continuously for over a century, surviving Prohibition by producing ice and near-beer, before closing production in 2001. From 2002 onward, developer Silver Ventures undertook a decade-long mixed-use redevelopment converting the historic industrial buildings into restaurants, residences, retail, and cultural spaces. The complex opened in phases beginning around 2009 and is now one of the most celebrated urban revitalization projects in the American South.
